What is MJCL?

The Massachusetts Junior Classical League (MJCL) is a vibrant organization dedicated to cultivating a deep understanding and appreciation of the classics, particularly the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, among junior high and high school students in Massachusetts. Serving as a local chapter of the esteemed National Junior Classical League (NJCL), the MJCL provides students with a wide range of opportunities to engage with the classics through academic, artistic, athletic, and community-focused endeavors.

State Convention
One of the key aspects of the MJCL is its annual convention, a highly anticipated gathering where students from various schools come together to showcase their knowledge and skills in the classics. This convention serves as a platform for students to participate in academic tests that assess their understanding of ancient languages, literature, history, and mythology. It also features art contests, oratory competitions, and athletic events inspired by the traditions of ancient Greece and Rome, allowing students to express their creativity and athleticism within a classical context.

Certamin
In addition to the convention, the MJCL organizes Certamen, a thrilling quiz bowl-style competition that tests participants’ knowledge of Latin language, grammar, mythology, and Roman history. This intellectually stimulating event brings together teams of students to compete against one another, fostering a spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie.

Values
The MJCL also places great emphasis on community service, encouraging students to contribute their time and skills to their local communities through classical-themed service projects. This aspect of the organization instills in students a sense of social responsibility and highlights the relevance and impact of the classics in the modern world.

Why us?
Through its diverse array of programs and activities, the MJCL creates a welcoming and inclusive community where students can develop leadership skills, forge lasting friendships, and immerse themselves in the timeless wonders of the classics. It not only fosters a deep appreciation for the cultural and intellectual achievements of ancient civilizations but also cultivates critical thinking, cultural understanding, and a lifelong passion for learning.
