This document contains all information about registration, contests, schedule, etc. for this year’s convention. This document will be updated frequently leading up to the convention.

 

CONVENTION OVERVIEW 

 

When: Friday, April 26 (pre-convention) & Saturday, April 27, 2024 

Where: Barnstable High School

Overnight Registration Closes: Friday, March 22nd

1-Day Registration Closes: Friday, April 12th

 

Please note the MassJCL Age Policy: JCL Delegates must be age 12 by April 26, 2024.

 

MassJCL COVID Policy: All registered attendees are encouraged to have up to date immunization. While encouraged, masks are optional.

 

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

COST BREAKDOWN

 

Student Overnight Cost: The cost for student overnight attendees will be $180.

 

Adult Overnight Cost: The cost for adult overnight attendees will be $100.

 

1-Day Attendee Cost: The cost for 1-day attendees on Saturday will be $60.

 

SCLer Cost: The convention will be free for SCL delegates.

N.B. The Paula Smith Fellowship will cover the cost for any sponsor attending their first convention.

Preconvention Writing Contests

The four categories are Prose: Fiction, Prose: Non-Fiction, Poetry, and Original Latin.

 

Entries must have a Classical theme. All entries must be typed and submitted digitally in PDF format. English entries may not exceed 500 words, while Latin entries may not exceed 100 words. Entries must be clearly labeled with category, school, student name, and level of Latin. The submission deadline will be Friday, April 12, 2024

Academic Contests 

Academic Testing will take place via Formative. All tests will consist of 30 multiple choice questions. Students must be registered for the convention in order to take tests and receive awards. Once registered, students will be enrolled in a GoFormative class and given instructions on completing their tests. 

 

This year the following tests will be offered: Upper Grammar, Lower Grammar, Latin Vocabulary, Latin Derivatives, Mythology, Roman History, Roman Life, PMAQ, Greek Civilization, Latin Literature, and Academic Pentathlon.

Street Certamen

This year the MassJCL will offer a Street Certamen Competition on Saturday. This competition will include questions on a wide variety of topics which range from tangentially classical to completely ridiculous. Students will be assigned to random teams. No preparation is necessary. Here are some Previous Street Certamen Questions.

Competitive Certamen

The preliminary rounds of Competitive Certamen will take place Saturday morning. The three teams at each level who advance to Finals will compete in person on Saturday. Each school will be permitted to enter up to two teams per level, but only one team will be able to qualify for the Finals. Schools may designate which team is eligible for Finals. Novice level ½ students will be eligible to compete in the Novice division as a level 1 student the following year.

Creative Arts 

This year the following contests will be offered: Costume, Sight Latin, English Oratory, Dramatic Interpretation. 

 

Here are the Dramatic Interpretation Passages for both MassJCL & the NJCL Convention.

 

The theme for the Costume Contest is “Mythology in the Stars: Constellations of the Zodiac.” Delegates may choose any character that they feel accurately represents this theme. The two categories in this contest are individual and pair

Graphic Arts 

A full list of projects can be found in the contest booklet. In addition, the Impromptu Art contest will be held Saturday afternoon.

Olympika

 

Girls Running: 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter, 1 mile 

Boys Running: 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter, 1 mile

Relay: Each team must include 2 girls & 2 boys; may include runners from more than one school

Girls & Boys: Shot Put

ELECTION INFORMATION 

 

To file for candidacy, delegates must submit this Candidacy Form by Friday, April 12th to Alex Xu (parliamentarian@massjcl.org). Each school is allowed no more than three candidates. 

 

Candidates will be required to submit a recorded speech by by Friday, April 19th to Alex Xu (parliamentarian@massjcl.org)

 

Ballots will be available after Candidates’ Open Forum on Saturday. Chapters will have until the end of the Voting Fellowship to submit their ballots for candidates and amendments. The results will be announced at That’s Entertainment.

 

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

 

There will be no That’s Entertainment at convention this year.
